| 4th Annual Lummis Day Celebration | |
4th Annual Lummis Day Celebration The 4th annual Lummis Day festival, set for Sunday, June 7, will feature a kaleidoscopic collection of performers, including Wil-Dog (a member of L.A.'s acclaimed Ozomatli), perennial “Best Los Angeles Country Band” winners I See Hawks in L.A., virtuoso blues guitarist legend Carlos Guitarlos, poets Ruben Martinez and Suzanne Lummis, members of the Chicano comedy group Culture Clash, plus Pilipino, Native American, Mexican and Pacific Islander folk artists, poets and visual artists of various stripes and traditions. For the community, it's a party with a purpose, a “kumbaya” for the various ethnicities and cultures that share the Northeast Los Angeles neighborhoods. And last year's attendance--about 9,000 people showed up--has turned it into one of the area's biggest annual events, a signature community arts and music showcase for the Northeast Los Angeles area ( including the neighborhoods of Highland Park, Eagle Rock, Cypress Park, Mount Washington, Montecito Heights, Hermon, El Sereno, Lincoln Heights, and Glassell Park). Tonga Puppets - Opening Ceremonies, 2008 - The Arroyo Arts Collective's Tonga Puppets parade is a traditional opening ceremony for the performances at Sycamore Grove Park. The Festival was organized by activists and neighborhood council representatives in 2006 to celebrate the area's history and cultural diversity. Lummis Day showcases musicians, poets and artists who live and work in the area and was designed to strengthen the ties among community's cultural, commercial and community resources. The program has grown in size and stature and now includes an educational program for Los Angeles teachers, a series of poetry readings and workshops that are held in public library branches throughout Northeast Los Angeles, an annual poetry reading and music recital at the city-administered park, Lummis Home, a Festival of music and dance performances at Sycamore Grove Park and an annual art exhibition held at the Autry National Center's Casa de Adobe, just across the street from the Festival's main center of activities at Sycamore Grove Park. The Grammy-winning band, The Mariachi Divas, 2008 Organized by community activists and members of neighborhood councils that serve the Northeast Los Angeles Lummis Day was named for author, adventurer and early advocate of multiculturalism, Charles Fletcher Lummis. In 2008, the Lummis Day organizing committee formed a California corporation, the Lummis day Community Foundation, Inc. and was granted federal non-profit status as a 501(c)3 organization. Since 2006, the principal Lummis Day event has been held on the first Sunday in June. The first event, on Sunday, June 4, 2006, featured local musicians Severin Browne, Ann Likes Red, Cuban-born musician Juan Carlos Formell, Severin Browne, Danza Azteca Cuahtlehuanitl, Pilipino folk ensemble Panama Rondalla, east L.A. rock band Quinto Sol, poets B. H. Fairchild and Suzanne Lummis the Tongva-Gabrielino Native American Dancers. Culture Clash members Richard Montoya & Ric Salinas were among the highlights on stage 2. In 2007, Lummis Day performers included Quetzal, Ollin, the Evangenitals, the Greger Walnum Blues band, the Susie Hansen Latin Band, Likas Pilipinas Folk Arts, Ballet Coco Folklorico, Rene and his Marionettes, poets Lynne Thompson, Charles Harper Webb, Steve Abee and Suzanne Lummis and cellist Kevin Buck. Jackson Browne, 2008 The 2008 Lummis Day event took place on June 1 and was headlined by Highland Park native son Jackson Browne. Other performers included comedy ensemble Culture Clash, Latina fusion rocker Cava, The Chapin Sisters, the Mariachi Divas, Artichoke, Ann Likes Red with guest star L.A. City Council President Eric Garcetti, poets Steve Kowit, liz gonalez, Cathie Sandstrom and guitarist Carlos Guitarlos, the “I Tell Stories” troupe of actors and storytellers, the Cypress Park Folkloric dancers, and others. Media sponsors for Lummis Day include TV stations KMEX and KTTV and public radio station KPFK. The Annenberg Foundation, the Autry National Center and the Northeast L.A. neighborhood councils—The Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council, the Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council, the Eagle Rock neighborhood Council and the Greater Cypress Park Neighborhood Council-- help underwrite the event. LA Councilmember Ed Reyes, CD1, & 2008 Lummus Day MC Hal Eisner, KCOP In a city obsessed with myth-making but starved of its own history, the neighborhoods of Northeast Los Angeles, which emerged as Southern California's first “art colony” in the 1890's, continue to play a vital role in L.A.'s cultural life and historical tradition. Nourished by our City's multicultural population, the creative spirit of Northeast Los Angeles remains vital in its music and dance, its art and its cuisine. Pavillion Crowd, 2008 Northeast L.A.'s cultural resources are unmatched in Southern California. The Southwest Museum of the American Indian, the city's oldest museum, towers above the Arroyo. Some of Los Angeles' architectural treasures, saved from the wrecking ball, are now located a few blocks away, collected at Heritage Square Museum. And also nearby are some of its most historically significant landmarks: Lummis Home and Casa De Adobe. There's the 200 acre-plus Debs Park, home to the Audubon Center educational facility, the River Center of Cypress Park, Sycamore Grove Park and the sprawling campus of Occidental College. | Women's 20th Century Club 105thFounders Day Celebration
On Thursday, February 12, 2009, the Women's 20th Century Club of Eagle Rock will hold its 105th Founders' Day celebration with a significant historic event. We hope you will be able to share this special program and luncheon with us. To mark the occasion of our 105th birthday and to celebrate the CFWC’s long-standing commitment to the Bell Project, we plan to install a commemorative bell on our Club House grounds. Originally, on August 15, 1906, the first bell was installed at the Pueblo De Los Angeles Mission Church at Olvera Street where it still stands today! It's been over 100 years since the first bell was hung in Los Angeles. Additional bells can be seen along Highway 101 as a reminder of our California culture and heritage. We are proud to say that members of the California Federation of Women's Clubs installed these bells and a Mrs. ASC Forbes designed the original historic bell. As active members of this same organization, it is fitting that our club and the community at large carry on this meaningful tradition. With this is mind, we are in the process of raising funds in the amount of $4,000 for the costs involved. This includes a memory dedication plaque with the inscription of individual, family or business names of those who donate $100 or more. This plaque will be proudly displayed inside our Clubhouse for all those who enter our doors to view. We are accepting donations in any amount and would greatly appreciate your support. Click here to open the donation form. Please plan to join us for this significant celebration. Sincerely, Eugénie Nogueira President

| Saving LA Project (SLAP) Rally at City Hall 12 noon | |
Friends and supporters of the Southwest Museum: On Monday July 14, 2008 at 12 p.m. on the south side of City Hall the community activists of this city will come to the first event as an act of rebellion against the Tyranny of City Hall. The day of the French Revolution Bastille Day This Revolution is the result of the PEOPLE feeling tired and frustrated with the lies, lack of accountability and ethics in City Hall. Although our issues might not all be the same we will unite to take back L.A. and create a new change. Ron Kay is the organizer. He has worked for the Daily News for twenty years you can find more information at his web site http://www.RonKayLA.com The Friends of the Southwest Museum Coalition will be there with their posters ready. We are tired and frustrated with the Mayor, Councilman Huizar and Councilman LaBonge. Their actions are helping the Autry to loot the Southwest Museum. They are part of destroying the history of our first museum in Los Angeles. If you are upset at these or other council members for ignoring the needs of the city and the PEOPLE and only serving special interest groups, their donors and their own personal interests come this Monday. This is your opportunity. WELL SEE YOU THERE. Democracy is not something you inherit, but something you have to fight for everyday Democracy is not democracy if it is the Autocracy of the informed Olga Hall On Monday, July 14, 2008 at 12 noon, people from people from around the City of Los Angeles will come together on the steps of City Hall as part of the Saving LA Project and to demand that our City Leadership join the people in making Los Angeles a Great City. Los Angeles is the 2nd largest City in the United States, the most powerful country in the world. We've got the biggest Municipal budget the City has ever seen and our City family is the best paid in the land. And yet... Our schools are failing, our streets are third-world, our communities are under siege and our leadership offer false dichotomies and a commitment to mediocrity. Through it all, passionate people throughout the city fight to improve the quality of life in their communities asking "Why isn't Los Angeles a GREAT City?" On Monday, July 14, 2008 at 12 noon the Saving LA Project "Storms the Bastille" and demands a GREAT City. Join us as friends from throughout the City present their visions of Great Streets, Great Schools, Great Communities and Great People working together to make LA a GREAT City. See you on the Streets!

A little bit about The Garden… In September 2000, a small group of dedicated parents sought to create a safe, affordable, and socially progressive nursery school for their children. Through the tireless efforts of these founding parents, coupled with help from a generous benefactor, our permanent school site was secured and has transformed over the past 7 years into a thriving place for families to grow and learn together. The Garden also became the first new co-op nursery school in Los Angeles to emerge in over 25 years. Located in Glassell Park, The Garden serves children from all economic and ethnic backgrounds in North East Los Angeles. We respect our children's individual needs while guiding them on their way to meaningful and respectful interactions with peers and community. Our mailing address is 3602 Eagle Rock Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90065. Thank you so much for your consideration and support. Told from a hometown perspective, the film presents the stories of farmers attempting to create this new model for agriculture and emerging, more sustainable solutions to the crises of recent years – solutions applicable not just to apples and not just to farming, but to nearly any sector of the American economy troubled by the effects of consolidation and globalization. These eco-pioneers also run a successful home business providing their surplus produce to local restaurants. Through their adventures in growing and preserving their own food, installing a solar power system, home-brewing biodiesel for fuel, raising backyard farm animals, and learning back-to-basics skills, these modern-day pioneers have revived the old-fashioned spirit of self-reliance and resourcefulness. Since 2001, their site has inspired hundreds of thousands to take steps towards a sustainable future and has generated a 21st century urban homestead movement. | Marmion Way
POSTPONED TO MARCH 14: "Mayor's Day of Service"-Marmion Way Beautification Project The Northeast LA Day of Service is officially postponed due to the weather conditions. The new tentative date is Saturday, March 14, 2009! Please mark your calendars and stay posted for additional details. Green on Green, by Lynnette Kampe Marmion Way Project Completion and Celebration on Mayor's Day of Service March 14 is the new date for the Mayor's city-wide Day of Service, and the Marmion Way Beautification project completion will be Mount Washington's contribution. Please come out to Marmion Way near Figueroa to help clean up and weed around the newly planted native plants and celebrate the completion of this great project. That is, if all goes well. We still don't have the R permit to install irrigation for the hillside plants, but the sidewalk cuts are in for street trees, and North East Trees and the Beautification Team (that's you) are ready to go. We have made significant progress. Several people have commented to me on how much better the area is looking. We have planted approximately 100 drought- tolerant native plants, and with the amount of rain we have had since planting, the new plants are looking very happy. We did get 15 new tree wells cut into the widened sidewalk between Figueroa St. and Avenue 42. Who knows, we may have an R permit by mid January. If and when we get the permit, we will have the matching funds from the Office of Community Beautification (OCB) to have North East Trees – a local non-profit that employs at-risk youth – help with weeding, irrigation installation, and spreading of mulch. North East Trees is waiting for the street trees, Pink Trumpet, to be delivered and inspected before they can schedule and complete the tree installations. Sycamore Grove/Highland Park area of Los Angeles, has had some much-needed maintenance work to keep this historic monument in good shape. The center has had sidings repaired, has been totally repainted inside and out, and has had floors refinished. Outside, the fences are freshly repainted and the beautiful awnings replaced. Few people realize the behind-the-scenes efforts that are needed to make a community project successful. Jerry Schneider has been working with City on obtaining the necessary permits for over 6 months. The project was planned for completion this fall but he was forced to send in a request for a time extension until mid-February, which the OCB quickly granted. Maybe the polite way of expressing dismay at the long delays in getting the irrigation permit would be to say, "The Office of Community Beautification has granted a two-month time extension for completion of our project because of the length of time it has taken to obtain permits from other City agencies." Hats off to Jerry for his planning, proposal-writing, and perseverance! This project will beautify our community for many years to come. February 7th from 9 AM to noon will be our project completion and dedication. The heavy lifting will be done by the North East Trees crew, hopefully ahead of time, but helping hands are needed to clean-up, weed around the newly planted natives and spread mulch. Remember that this is a matching grant. Please stop by to lend a hand and show your community pride. RSVP to lynnette@pacbell.net to help us plan for supplies and refreshments.

HP Heritage Trust, Sycamore Grove Walking Tour, 4/25 This tour explores the rich and varied architectural and social history of the Sycamore Grove area of Highland Park, one of Los Angeles' oldest neighborhoods. Located along the Arroyo Seco, Highland Park was created in 1870 by developers who purchased the territory from Spanish and Mexican landowners. Incorporated into Los Angeles in 1895, it quickly became a thriving part of the city, and was once home to both Occidental College and USC's School of Fine Arts. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Arroyo Seco was a center of the nation's emerging Arts and Crafts movement, and was home to one of Los Angeles' first great preservationists, naturalist Charles Lummis. |
Countdown to Lummis Day: Eugene Edwards Band Eugene Edwards and his Band will appear on Stage One will follow BombaChante in the mid afternoon slot, Sunday, June 7 at the Lummis Day Festival. Here's a quote from Edwards' website: "I'd like to be thought of as the guy who reintroduced whatever it was that Springsteen, Tom Petty, Elvis Costello - the post-Dylan songwriters - had. And, like The Clash has shown that if you have just one person standing in front of you, you owe it to them to sweat every bit that you have in your body - I want to be the guy who, if they want to hear one more song, I am ready to give it to them. If they're still standing at the end of a 45-minute set, I feel like I've done something wrong." Download video! The 4th annual Lummis Day will take place at three locations: Lummis Home (poetry and music from 10:30am-noon), Sycamore Grove Park (music, dance, theater and food from12:30pm-7:30pm) and Casa de Adobe (art exhibits, from 1:00pm-6:00pm). The 4th Annual Lummis Day: The Festival of Northeast Los Angeles will be presented on Sunday June 7 by the Autry National Center, the Annenberg Foundation and the neighborhood councils of Northeast Los Angeles (Arroyo Seco, Historic Highland Park, Greater Cypress Park, Eagle Rock, L.A. 32 and Glassell Park.) A June 30th special hearing is the pivotal meeting! The City will decide whether to to approve Autry's proposed project to double its size in Griffith Park and absorb the Southwest Museum. Plan now to attend and start asking your friends and neighbors too. We are opposed to the three requested actions as presented in the staff report. | Whats Next for Southwest Museum
Friends of the Southwest Museum CoalitionWhat's Next? With the flurry of recent activity and Autry’s spin to cast a negative light upon our community and elected officials, we will host a meeting to synthesize these last two months. The Friends of the Southwest Museum Coalition will host the meeting for our members, both individuals and the many organizations that have come together around this issue. This meeting will help to portray the truth and implications of Autry’s project withdrawal, and with you, set forth a game plan for the next chapter in this journey to Save the Southwest Museum. After seven years of trying to work with the Autry to an equitable solution for all, we are in many ways, back at the starting point. Please stay involved and attend Monday’s meeting. Councilmember Jose Huizar has been invited to attend. Meeting on Monday Aug. 31st7:00 p.m.; 6:30 Chat and Light Refreshments Highland Park Ebell Club - 131 Avenue 57 in Highland Park (1/2 block from Figueroa Street, across from public parking lot) Thank you!
